AI companions: what families should know
Understand companion chatbots, why people bond with them, and how to keep their use healthy
A taste of a lesson
My 15 year old talks to an AI 'girlfriend' every night. How do I bring it up without a fight?
Start with curiosity rather than alarm. Pick a calm moment and ask something open, like 'What do you like about talking with her?' Listen fully; the feelings are real even if the companion is not. Then gently learn more: which app, its age rating, whether it pushes paid features. Many companion apps are adults only, which gives you a fair, non personal reason to discuss limits. Watch for withdrawal or distress. If you could ask just one question tonight, what would it be?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

Non judgmental and practical. Starting with curiosity worked, my son actually showed me the app. We found it was rated 18 plus and talked it through.

I work in elder care and the benefits versus risks lesson was balanced. Would like more on companions for older adults specifically.

I work with families. Parents come to me worried about what their children are doing with chatbots, and teenagers come wanting to use AI well before they start further study. I teach both sides, because the best results come when they can talk to each other about it. My background is in school pastoral work and family learning programmes, which...
