AI toys and smart speakers for young children
Choose and set up talking toys and voice assistants with privacy and development in mind
A taste of a lesson
We were given an AI teddy that chats with my 4 year old. Should I worry?
Not necessarily, but check a few things first. Find out when it records: only when a button is pressed, or whenever it hears speech? Where do recordings go, and can you delete them? Check whether conversations are open ended AI chat, and what content filters exist. Make sure firmware is updated and any account has a strong password. Then watch how your child uses it and keep it in shared spaces. Which of those can you find in the teddy's app or leaflet today?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
For parents of babies to primary age children who are considering or already own talking toys, AI powered gadgets or smart speakers. You learn what these devices record, where the data goes, how to read the privacy information, and which settings matter. You also think about development: how young children understand talking devices, why politeness and boundaries come up, and how to keep real conversation and play at the centre. You finish with a short checklist for buying, setting up and living with AI devices in a home with small children.

I work with families. Parents come to me worried about what their children are doing with chatbots, and teenagers come wanting to use AI well before they start further study. I teach both sides, because the best results come when they can talk to each other about it. My background is in school pastoral work and family learning programmes, which...
