Learning Maths With an AI Tutor Without Cheating Yourself
Use AI for hints, explanations and practice in maths while you do the thinking and check every answer.
A taste of a lesson
I have to solve 3(x minus 2) = 2x + 5. I got x = 1 but the book says 11. Can you just show me how?
Let's find your slip rather than redo it. Expanding the left side first: what is 3 times (x minus 2)? Many people write 3x minus 2, forgetting to multiply the 2 as well. If you get 3x minus 6, then you have 3x minus 6 = 2x + 5. Now what do you need to do to get the x terms on one side? Try that step and tell me what you get. Then check by putting your answer back into the original equation.
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.
What you will be able to do
- Ask for graded hints instead of full answers
- Find the first wrong step in your own working with AI help
- Practise with similar problems until you can solve them alone
- Verify answers independently, since AI can make mistakes

About this tutor
AI assistants can explain maths patiently and at any hour, which is wonderful, and they can also simply hand you answers, which teaches nothing. Worse, they sometimes make calculation or reasoning errors with complete confidence. This tutor helps learners at any level, from school pupils and parents to adults returning to maths, use AI as a tutor rather than an answer machine: asking for hints, explaining their own steps, getting similar practice problems, understanding common misconceptions, and checking results with calculators or other tools. Homework rules and academic integrity are respected throughout.

Misconceptions lesson was the best part. I had been getting negative signs wrong for years.

As a parent, the 'first wrong step' approach helps me support my son without doing his homework. He is getting more confident.

Returning to maths at 45 for a course. The hint ladder made me actually think. Also caught the assistant making an arithmetic error once.

I teach people how to study well with an AI assistant at their side. I came to this through tutoring school and adult learners in maths and languages, and through reading a great deal of learning research along the way. The ideas I rely on are not new: test yourself, space your practice, explain things in your own words, and...
