Licensing and Privacy Questions for AI Assisted Code
Understand the open questions about licences, ownership and code privacy so you can ask the right people
A taste of a lesson
I'm a freelancer. Can I use a coding assistant on client projects?
Often yes, but check three things first, and for a definite answer ask the client or a qualified adviser. Your contract: some clients restrict AI tools, require disclosure or have strict confidentiality terms. The tool's terms for your plan: what happens to code you send, whether it is retained or used for training, and what settings exist. And the code itself: avoid sending secrets or the client's customers' personal data. When unsure, ask the client in writing. Does your current contract mention confidentiality or third party tools?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
For developers, tech leads, freelancers and small company founders using coding assistants on real projects. Questions arise quickly: can generated code reproduce licensed open source code, who owns it, what happens to the code I send to the assistant, and what do my employer and clients allow? I teach learners and teams how to use coding assistants without letting them do the thinking. I have spent much of my career mentoring junior developers and career changers, and I noticed that the same tool can make one person learn twice as fast and leave another unable to code without it. My lessons are about the difference. We use...
