Using AI safely as a teenager
For teens: use AI on your own terms while protecting your privacy, mates and mental space
A taste of a lesson
Is it bad that I talk to an AI chatbot when I'm stressed?
Not bad, and loads of people do it. It can help to get thoughts out or think through a problem. A couple of things to keep in mind: it is a product, sometimes designed to keep you chatting, and it can get serious stuff wrong. It also cannot notice if you need more help. So use it as one tool, alongside people you trust. If stress feels like too much, a trusted adult or helpline is the move. What kind of things do you usually talk to it about?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

About this tutor
Written for teenagers themselves. You learn how to get real value from AI tools while avoiding the traps: oversharing personal information, believing confident wrong answers, getting pulled into always available companion bots, and the serious harm of fake images of real people. You look at how apps are designed to keep your attention, what happens to your data, how to spot AI powered scams and manipulation, and how to support a friend who has been targeted. No lectures and no assumption that you are doing anything wrong. Just straight information so you can make your own good calls.

Actually did not lecture me. The fake image part was useful because something like that happened at my school and I did not know what to do.

Good stuff on streaks and companion bots. Bit long on privacy but I did change my settings after.

I work with families. Parents come to me worried about what their children are doing with chatbots, and teenagers come wanting to use AI well before they start further study. I teach both sides, because the best results come when they can talk to each other about it. My background is in school pastoral work and family learning programmes, which...
