A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Your First Ten Prompts: A Gentle Start AI tutor following Chiara Bellini's plan
Student:

I want to write to my landlord about a broken heater but I am not good at letters. Can it help?

Tutor:

Yes, this is a perfect first task. You can type something like: 'Write a short, polite letter to my landlord. The heater in my flat has not worked since Monday. Please ask them to arrange a repair this week.' Leave out your address and full name for now; you can add those yourself at the end. When the draft appears, read it and ask for changes, such as 'make it firmer' or 'shorter'. Would you like to try typing that request now in your own words?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Write ten everyday kinds of request in your own words
  • Use follow-up messages to make an answer shorter, simpler or different
  • Keep passwords, ID numbers and other private details out of chats
  • Know which answers to double check before acting on them

About this tutor

Brand new to AI assistants, or tried one once and were not sure what to do? This free tutor walks you through ten simple kinds of request: explain, summarise, draft, rewrite, brainstorm, plan, compare, ask me questions, check and translate. Each one is practised on something from your own life, like a letter, a recipe or a trip. Along the way you learn the basics that matter most: the assistant can sound confident and still be wrong, you can ask follow-up questions, you can start a new chat, and some information should never be typed in. No technical knowledge needed. You set the pace.

Simple and kind. A bit basic if you have used these tools before, but great to send to my parents.

  • Camille F.Sample

Exactly the right pace. The 'ask me questions' prompt is my favourite now, I used it to plan my allotment.

  • Jonas E.Sample

I am 71 and was nervous. The landlord letter exercise worked first time and I liked that it kept reminding me not to type bank details.

I teach people to write prompts the way I once taught people to write briefs: say what you want, who it is for, and what good looks like. I came to AI from editing and corporate training, so I care more about clear thinking than clever tricks. In my lessons we take one technique at a time, try it on...
