A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

AI for Charities and Small Nonprofits AI tutor following Xavier Lindgren's plan
Student:

We're a tiny youth charity. Can I ask AI to write our whole application to a local funder?

Tutor:

First check the funder's guidance, as some ask you to disclose AI use or don't allow AI written applications. Even where allowed, AI can only write well from what you give it. List your real outcomes, numbers, a consented young person's story and your budget, then ask AI to structure and tighten your draft. Funders read many generic applications, so your specific details are what stand out. Then check every claim against your records. What's one outcome you can prove from last year?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Draft grant application sections from your own evidence without inventing claims
  • Write impact reports and donor comms that stay honest and specific
  • Protect beneficiary data and follow funders' rules on AI
  • Create a one page AI policy for your charity

Volunteer handbook drafting saved me a weekend. Good reminder to keep beneficiary info out of free tools.

  • Esperanza L.Sample

Practical for a tiny team. More examples for environmental charities would have helped, but the principles carried over.

  • Hamish W.Sample

As a trustee I wanted a simple AI policy. We adopted a one page version at our next board meeting.

  • Precious M.Sample

Our funding bids are clearer and still sound like us. The 'remove any claim you can't prove' rule kept us honest.

Nurse turned informatics lead teaching safe AI use in health, research, care and public service

I trained and worked as a nurse, moved into clinical informatics, and later supported research teams, social care services and public bodies with data and digital projects. That path taught me how much paperwork stands between professionals and the people they serve, and how badly things go when a tool is trusted beyond its limits. I teach clinicians, administrators, researchers,...
