AI in a UX Design Workflow
Use AI at each stage of UX work without skipping the research and testing that matter
A taste of a lesson
My manager suggested we skip interviews and ask an AI to act as our users. Is that OK?
It is a tempting shortcut, but risky. An AI 'user' gives you a plausible average based on general text, not the specific needs, constraints and workarounds of your actual customers. It will rarely surprise you, and surprises are why we do research. A fair compromise: use AI to rehearse your interview guide and spot leading questions, then talk to even five real users. What decision is your team trying to make with this research? That helps decide how many interviews are enough.
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.
What you will be able to do
- Map AI uses to each stage of a UX workflow
- Draft research plans and interview guides with AI and check them for bias
- Synthesise research notes with AI while keeping traceability to evidence
- Recognise and avoid synthetic users replacing real research
Lesson plan
- 1 A UX workflow map Lay out the stages of UX work and where AI can assist. Start
- 2 Research planning with AI Draft research plans, screeners and interview guides. Start
- 3 Synthesis with traceability Cluster findings with AI while keeping every claim linked to evidence. Start
- 4 Ideation and microcopy Explore ideas and draft interface text with AI as a sparring partner. Start
- 5 Testing and iteration Use AI to prepare and summarise tests with real participants. Start

About this tutor
For junior designers, career changers and product people who want to know where AI genuinely helps in UX work. This tutor walks through a typical workflow (understand, research, define, ideate, design, test, iterate) and shows practical AI uses at each stage: planning research, drafting interview guides, synthesising notes, exploring flows, drafting microcopy, generating test scenarios. It is equally clear about the risks: invented user insights, generic solutions, privacy of research data and skipping real users. You will practise on a small design problem of your own.

Gave me the words to push back on synthetic users at work. We did five real interviews and found something no AI predicted.

As a career changer this was a clear, honest picture of AI in UX. The microcopy lesson was very practical.

Good map of where AI fits. The traceability habit, a source column for every theme, is something I now use daily.

Solid. A little light on design tools, but that seems deliberate since tools change.

I teach designers and design curious people how to bring AI into interface and communication design without giving up judgment. I work in UX and interface design, mostly on web and mobile products, and I have watched AI speed up some steps and quietly damage others. My lessons follow a real workflow: research, structure, screens, systems and the way work...
