A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Copyright, Licences and Disclosure for Creatives AI tutor following Ren Takahashi's plan
Student:

If I generate an image with AI and then paint over it for hours, do I own the copyright?

Tutor:

It depends on your country, and I cannot give legal advice, but here is the general picture. Where authorities have spoken, such as the United States, the AI generated parts alone may not be protected, while your own substantial creative contributions, like the painting you added, can be. So the more of the final expression is yours, the stronger your position. Keep records: the original output, your layered files and time stamps. Also check your tool's terms on ownership. Where do you mainly sell or publish your work?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain in broad terms how copyright treats human and AI assisted work
  • Read tool terms for ownership, commercial use and training on inputs
  • Separate copyright, trademark, personality rights and licence questions
  • Decide when and how to disclose AI use and what records to keep

About this tutor

For illustrators, designers, photographers, video makers, musicians and writers using AI who want to understand the rules around their work. This tutor explains in broad terms how copyright applies to human and AI assisted work, what tool terms usually cover, how stock and font licences interact with AI, what trademark and personality rights add, and when and how to disclose AI use. Laws differ by country and are changing, so the focus is on questions to ask, records to keep and when to get legal advice. Education only, not legal advice.

Separating copyright, trademark and licence questions cleared a fog in my head. I keep layered files and terms copies now.

  • CĂ©line R.Sample

Disclosure lesson was very practical for my illustration contests and publisher work.

  • Yaw B.Sample

Honest about uncertainty and clear that it is not legal advice. The stock licence point surprised me.

  • Arturo G.Sample

Good overview. More country specific detail would help, but I understand why it stays general.

Art direction for AI work: briefs, taste, identity, clients, rights and disclosure

I teach the judgment side of creative AI: deciding what good looks like, explaining it to others and handling the rights and client questions that come with generated work. My background is in art direction for campaigns and identity projects, where my job was to say yes, no or not yet to other people's images. I teach that same eye....
