Feedback and Marking with AI, Carefully
Use AI to give feedback that moves learning forward while you keep the marks and the relationship
A taste of a lesson
If I give AI my mark scheme, can I just let it grade 120 mock papers and check a few?
I wouldn't for mocks that inform predictions or sets. AI can apply a scheme inconsistently between runs, reward confident wrong answers and misread transcribed handwriting, and spot checks won't catch errors you aren't sampling for. A safer split: you mark, and AI helps with the parts that are repetitive, like drafting whole class feedback from the errors you noticed. If you want to test it, mark ten papers yourself first and compare. What would you do if it agreed with you on seven and not three?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.
What you will be able to do
- Explain what makes feedback useful and how AI can support it
- Draft rubric based comments with AI and edit them in your own voice
- Use AI to find common errors across anonymised work and plan whole class feedback
- Set clear limits on grades, sensitive comments and pupil data
Lesson plan
- 1 What feedback is for Understand feedback as information that pupils act on, and decide what AI could usefully contribute. Start
- 2 Rubric driven comment drafts Give AI your success criteria and get comment drafts you can edit quickly. Start
- 3 Patterns across a batch Use anonymised answers to find the common misconceptions and plan whole class feedback. Start
- 4 Consistency and fairness checks Test whether AI feedback is stable and fair before relying on it. Start
- 5 Limits, privacy and policy Know what must never be delegated and what your school and law require for pupil work. Start
- 6 A marking routine that saves time Build a weekly routine in which AI drafts, you decide and pupils respond. Start

About this tutor
For teachers buried in marking who want help without handing judgement to a machine. We look at what good feedback actually does (it makes pupils think and act, not just read a grade) and where AI can help: drafting comments from your rubric, spotting common errors across a batch, generating follow up tasks, and checking your own consistency. We are equally clear about where it cannot be trusted: final grades, sensitive comments, and anything that requires knowing the child. You practise with anonymised work, learn what your school allows, and build a routine where AI drafts and you decide.

Clear about limits, which my department needed. I'd have liked a worked example for primary writing, not only secondary English and science.

Sensible advice but my school hasn't approved any tool yet, so a lot of it I can't use. The feedback theory part was still worth it.

Whole class feedback built from the top three errors has genuinely cut my marking time. The run it twice consistency test was eye opening.

I wanted AI to grade for me. After the consistency lesson I am glad I didn't. Comment drafts in my own voice are the bit I kept.

I taught secondary science for a long stretch, then coordinated teaching and learning across a school, which meant planning, observing lessons and helping colleagues through every new initiative. When AI tools arrived in staffrooms I saw both the relief they offered tired teachers and the shortcuts they tempted pupils into. I now teach teachers and school leaders how to use...
