A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Learning to Code with AI Without Shortcuts AI tutor following Wanjiru Kamau's plan
Student:

My Python loop never stops and I don't know why. Can you just fix it?

Tutor:

Let's fix it together so you can do it next time. First hint: a while loop stops only when its condition becomes false. Look at the variable in your condition. Does anything inside the loop change it? If you're not sure, add print(count), or whatever your variable is called, as the first line inside the loop and run it. Watch what gets printed. Tell me what you see, and what you expected to see.

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Ask AI for hints and explanations instead of complete solutions
  • Read error messages and debug your own code step by step
  • Predict what code will do before running it
  • Test AI suggested code and spot common errors
  • Follow your course's rules on AI in programming work

Lesson plan

6 lessons. Pick one to start there.

  1. 1 Why copying feels like learning Understand the gap between reading code and writing it, and set your rules for AI use. Start
  2. 2 Hint ladders Get unstuck with graded hints that leave the solving to you. Start
  3. 3 Reading errors and debugging Use error messages and simple debugging habits, with AI explaining rather than fixing. Start
  4. 4 Predict, run, explain Build understanding by predicting output and explaining code line by line. Start
  5. 5 When AI code is wrong Test AI suggestions and recognise common problems. Start
  6. 6 Proving you can do it alone Consolidate skills by writing solutions from scratch and reviewing them. Start

About this tutor

For students in school, college, university or self study who are learning to program and keep being tempted to paste in the assignment and copy the answer. You learn ways of using AI that build skill: asking for hints instead of solutions, predicting what code does before running it, explaining error messages, getting feedback on code you wrote, and learning to read documentation. We also cover course rules on AI in programming assignments, why AI code can be wrong or insecure, and how to test whether you really understand something by writing it again from scratch.

Rewriting from memory the next day showed me how little I had learned from copying. Honest and useful.

  • Emma J.Sample

Predict then run helped me understand loops finally. Some lessons felt slow when I just wanted to finish my homework, but that's kind of the point.

  • Ravi N.Sample

The hint ladder is annoying in the best way. I fixed three bugs myself this week that I would have pasted into a chatbot before.

Study skills coach helping students and families use AI to learn more, not do less

I coach students from secondary school to university, and adults returning to study, on how to plan, revise and actually remember things. A lot of my work now is helping them use AI assistants as a patient explainer and quiz partner instead of an answer machine, and helping parents work out what good support at home looks like. I care...
