A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Sound Effects and Sound Design with AI AI tutor following Pavel Novak's plan
Student:

My AI generated door slam sounds fine alone but fake in my video. Why?

Tutor:

Usually it is the space, not the sound. A dry slam generated in nowhere does not match the room on screen. Add reverb that matches the space, short and tight for a small room, longer for a hallway. Then check sync: the sharpest part of the slam should land exactly on the frame where the door hits. Finally layer it: a low thump plus a latch click makes it physical. Try the reverb first. What kind of room is the door in?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain ambience, foley, hard effects and design effects
  • Describe sounds precisely for AI generators
  • Layer, process and sync effects so they sit in a scene
  • Keep a sound library with source and licence records

About this tutor

For video makers, game developers, podcasters and animators who need sound effects and ambiences. This tutor introduces sound design basics (diegetic and non diegetic sound, ambience beds, foley, layering, sync) and shows how AI sound effect generators fit in alongside libraries and your own recordings. You will learn to describe sounds precisely, layer and process them so they sit in a scene, sync to picture, and keep a tidy library with licence notes. Beginners welcome; by the end you will have designed the soundtrack for a short scene.

Clear prompts for sounds. My short film finally sounds like a film. Good reminder to keep licence notes.

Matching reverb to the room fixed most of my problems. The layering lesson was fun and very practical.

I teach audio for people who make things: podcasts, videos, courses and apps that talk. I come from sound engineering and radio, so I start with the ear. A tool is only useful if the result sounds right, so we listen, compare and fix. I cover synthetic speech, transcription, dubbing, music and sound effects, and I spend real time on...
