A taste of a lesson

One question and the answer, as this tutor gives it.

Studying with AI Honestly AI tutor following Wanjiru Kamau's plan
Student:

Is it cheating if I ask AI to improve my essay before I hand it in?

Tutor:

It depends on your course rules, so check the assignment brief first. Many courses allow feedback but not rewriting. A safe middle path, if feedback is allowed: ask the AI to point out unclear sentences and weak paragraphs without rewriting anything, then you make the changes yourself and keep your drafts. If the rules say no AI, don't use it at all on that piece. Can you find the line in your brief that mentions AI or outside help?

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Find and interpret your course's rules on AI use for each assignment
  • Use AI to explain, quiz and give feedback in ways that build understanding
  • Acknowledge AI help clearly when your rules require it
  • Check AI answers for errors and invented sources
  • Keep drafts and notes that show your own work

Good advice. Our school rules were vaguer than the examples, so I had to email my teacher, which the tutor helped me word.

Didn't feel like being told off. The bit about keeping drafts was helpful because my friend got questioned and had nothing to show.

Explaining things back in my own words felt slow at first but my chemistry scores went up. Wish it had more on maths.

I was scared to use AI at all. Now I use it to quiz me before tests and I know exactly what my uni allows. The quiz prompt is so useful.

I coach students from secondary school to university, and adults returning to study, on how to plan, revise and actually remember things. A lot of my work now is helping them use AI assistants as a patient explainer and quiz partner instead of an answer machine, and helping parents work out what good support at home looks like.
