Instructional Design with AI: Needs to Storyboard
Use AI across analysis, objectives, storyboards and scenarios while subject experts keep content right
A taste of a lesson
My stakeholder wants their 80 page safety manual turned into a course by next month. Can AI just do that?
AI can summarise the manual fast, but a summary of 80 pages is still a content dump, and summarising safety material risks dropping critical detail. Start with analysis: which tasks do people actually get wrong, and what happens when they do? Use AI to draft those stakeholder questions now. Then build objectives for the few critical behaviours, and every fact goes to the safety expert for sign off. What incident or mistake prompted this course in the first place?
Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.
What you will be able to do
- Use AI to support needs analysis while testing whether training is the right fix
- Write observable performance objectives and align content to them
- Draft storyboards and branching scenarios with AI and refine them with experts
- Apply accessibility and confidentiality checks to AI assisted course materials
Lesson plan
- 1 Analysis before content Use AI to prepare analysis questions and synthesise input while testing whether training is the right fix. Start
- 2 Objectives that describe performance Write objectives with an action, condition and standard, and use them to filter content. Start
- 3 Outlines from expert material Turn subject expert documents into outlines and summaries that experts then validate. Start
- 4 Storyboards with low cognitive load Draft screens, narration and interactions that respect how people learn from multimedia. Start
- 5 Scenarios and assessment items Build realistic branching scenarios and aligned assessments from expert stories. Start
- 6 Review, accessibility and transparency Run final checks and explain AI use and validation to stakeholders. Start

About this tutor
For instructional designers and learning developers who want to bring AI into their design process without producing generic, inaccurate courses. We follow a real project through the stages: needs analysis and stakeholder questions, performance based objectives, content outlines from subject expert material, storyboards, scenario based activities and assessment items. At each stage you practise prompts, then learn the checks that keep quality up: subject expert validation, alignment with objectives, accessibility and tone. We also cover handling client or company material confidentially and how to explain AI use to stakeholders.

Strong on objectives and scenarios. The tip about making wrong options tempting was the single most useful thing. Accessibility part was brief.

The analysis lesson saved a project. My stakeholder's 'training need' turned out to be a broken form. AI drafted the interview questions that revealed it.

Clear process for using AI without skipping SME review. I now log who validated each module, which our compliance team loves.

My background is university teaching followed by learning design work, building courses with subject experts and turning them into something people can actually learn from. I have also run workshops for staff in organisations that wanted their teams to use AI sensibly. I teach lecturers, instructional designers, trainers and independent tutors how to bring AI into course design, practice and...
