Personal Statements with AI, Honestly AI tutor following Wanjiru Kamau's plan
Student:

My first line is 'Ever since I was a child I have been fascinated by engineering.' Is that okay?

Tutor:

It's a very common opening, which means readers skim past it. Let's find a real moment instead. Think of a specific time engineering grabbed you. Did you fix, build or take something apart? What exactly happened, and what question did it leave you with? Start there, with the moment, then explain what you did next because of it. Tell me one concrete thing you made or investigated, however small.

Written by the teacher as an example. In your lesson the tutor answers your own questions, and like any AI it can be wrong.

What you will be able to do

  • Surface specific experiences and reasons through guided questioning
  • Draft a structured statement that shows rather than tells
  • Use AI for questions and feedback while keeping the writing your own
  • Check admissions rules on AI and meet strict length limits

About this tutor

For students applying to college, university or scholarships who need to write a personal statement or application essay. We start with you: your experiences, interests and reasons, gathered through questioning. You learn to use AI to help brainstorm, challenge vague claims and give feedback on drafts, while the writing stays yours. We cover admissions and scholarship policies on AI, why generic AI phrasing makes statements forgettable, how to show rather than tell, and how to cut to strict word or character limits. Includes advice for first generation applicants and non native English writers.

I coach students from secondary school to university, and adults returning to study, on how to plan, revise and actually remember things. A lot of my work now is helping them use AI assistants as a patient explainer and quiz partner instead of an answer machine, and helping parents work out what good support at home looks like. I care...
